Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.
|
Yup, the umpire admits he made a mistake:
Quote:
"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."
"It was the biggest call of my career," said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

The link has vid of replay. Wasn't even close, runner as they say, out by a mile. In my mind Galarraga was perfect tonight, got robbed of his place in sports history.
Instead of great story of 3 perfect games in a month, now the talk will be bad officiating, lack of replays in many sports.
I believe officially MLB has no policy on reversing calls like this - though they should. Hopefully MLB can correct this and indeed credit Galarraga of his perfect game. The mistake was made, but still quite possibly, the single worst blown call in the history of baseball.
Unfortunately, people officials make mistakes as admitted by Joyce.
There is a silver lining, looking at the replays, Armando Galaragga keeping his composure showing a lot of class.
