Default Special needs kids/siblings

Does anyone here have kids or siblings or immediate family members with special needs?

Pir8-
most of the kids i teach have a learning disability of some kind. some have language impairments. and i've taught a couple who are elective mutes (won't speak in certain environments like school). The're good kids and always try their best!

Yes, I enjoy it a lot! The most challenging part is the paperwork (it's always more with Special needs), and sometimes trying to get others to understand their needs and not to be so hard on them. It was also difficult, when I was new to the role, figuring out their levels (testing) and planning appropriately, but that's a lot better now, with experience. Also, when I first went into the role, it was weird not being the regular classroom teacher. You have to give up a bit of the control, but I've since found diplomatic and clever ways around that! ha!

The kids are great, and I love working with them. THEY are definitely NOT amongst the most challenging part of the job! They work really hard (so far), and desperately want to please you, and definitely have their talents!

Oh yeah, I also teach the gifted kids a few times a week. So basically, I see all students with special needs at the grade level. So it's really quite varied and exciting! I've been teaching for a while now and I still love it!

I've always had a lot of respect for teachers, teachers who want to empower their students, whether they are normal kids or special needs kids. It's funny you say that they try to please you, but I've noticed just by observing such kids that no matter what you tell them to do, they always do try to please you..it's almost as though they are knowingly or unknowingly trying to prove that they are just like the rest of us. Just my observation, I can't really generalize.

Have been thinking lately about giving up this whole IT field and getting into teaching myself. And I've heard that there is a huge lack of male teachers in Ontario schools.

Glad to hear that you've been doing it for a while and are still on track with it. Keep it up! Shape our future generations to be the brightest.

cool. if it's something you're really interested in and you think you'd like it, then go for it! yes, male elementary teachers are always a rarity no matter where you go in the world. it's one of those nurturing professions like nursing which doesn't attract tonnes of men.

Default Special needs kids/siblings

i my self dont have kids. But i think that special needs kids should be in a normal environment because in grade school two years ago there was a child in special needs and now that i am in high school he has progressed so much that he is starting to take applied normal high school courses. I believe that it was because he was able to learn from the people around him. Taking all the special needs kids and sticking them in one school does not allow them to really understand the mistakes other people make and does not allow them to want to achieve something else and set goals.

love to speak no matter what
