    desi people and smiling

    #1
it doesn't take much to smile..but desis never do.

I went to an indian restaurant yesterday (The Host) and the indian employees never smiled once while taking our order or anything. Yet there was a staff member who looked russian, she smiled and laughed ..and even replaced the spoons after apetizers. The desi staff gave us the same spoons back for the main course meal.

The smile thing I've noticed at EVERY desi restaurant. I went to Lahore Tikka House at gerrard last weekend. They all look like they don't want to be there and they have better stuff to do with their time.

You never see that at any non-desi restaurants like Moxies or East Side Marios. May be chinese restaurants. What's the big deal with putting a smile on your face?

dignity of labour.. people who have grown up here are accustomed and expected to work in such jobs to pay for schooling etc. Most desis think they are above this.
Another reason could be they are working for their dads/family etc where they probably make less than they could outside.

why dont you tell a joke or something. try this one:

There was an english man, who was singing 'there was a cold day', while having a shit in a publec washroom.
A sardar walks by and hears him singing 'there was a cold day, there was a cold day' he slam's the door wide open, the englishman in shock say's, 'what the bloody hell are u doin'. the sardar replies, 'oh, sorry yarr i thought u said, darwaza khol deyh'.

if he still doesnt laugh, let alone smile, tell the waiter to f off

I've noticed the same thing....actually speaking of The Host, I noticed this at their Richmond Hill location. I can't remember about the Downtown location.

But I think I agree with Samurai, I believe they are either being forced to do this and really don't want to be waiting tables...or they are just too full of themselves...Then again I think most desi's think they are too important to mingle with the regular folks..

                  marxism makes me happy.

and girls poot differently than boys. boys go brap and just smell. girls just *poot*. we have a glow. that is our 'aura'.

I'm with MisterZ, you crack jokes or make chitchat and they will smile/laugh. They just need to be pushed alittle.

which host?! i know a guy tgat works a tht eone in sauga and he is ALWAYS smiling. when i met him i was creeped out cos i was like... damn... this nigga must be crazy.. *scoots away*

                      but yr right.
you also have to understand that with desi establishments, sales arent pushed. management isnt on the staff's ass to upsell and stuff. and the quality of food at indian restaurants varies hardcore so really they dont hafta be nice if they dont want to cos usually people go for the food, not theservice. also, they arent as open to the power of suggestion. so really, as long as these places can hire people that will do the job and not steal, they are happy cos the ones that survive have a strong customer base already. i'm sure the sales techniques would work on the goreh that go and stuff, but with goreh especially they are there for the experience of the food, not the eating out.

just came back from lunch at the host. can't say that i really noticed the non-smiling thing and i usually do notice those types of things at restaurants, but more so at non-desi/chinese places....

i guess today i was just too busy stuffing my face with butter chicken and naan and trying not to get anything on my clothes to notice whether any one smiled at me or not...

The really pindu ones seem kinda snobby, they dont smile just stare. But I have been in clothing stores and restaurants where the desi people were smiling.

think about it...all waiters in desi restaurants are refs. they arent snobby, just dont know any better. you have to make them comfortable. all you have to do is talk to them a bit. then theyll be more out going

Weird. They smile whenever I go there.

I guess it's because they know your not gonna tip them. If it was a gora they would be grinning ear to ear.
